Drinking Clean & Safe Water for the First Time

International Medical Relief partners with Song Saa Foundation to bring clean water to the Koh Rong. In 2013, the International Medical Relief Team and the Song Saa Resort Boat of Hope evaluated the water sources in the Koh Rong for neighboring communities. We discovered that all sources of well water were contaminated and the water was not clean. Since this time, our collaborative organizations have been researching a plan that would be sustainable for these communities and provide clean water to everyone. We are pleased to announce that today marks the first day we are bringing this dream to fruition. […]

Children’s Health in Cambodia

The team was able to care for some very special children today in Cambodia. HIV is prevalent in the islands and this year IMR saw our first HIV+ child, a 9 year old boy, that has had the disease passed on to this next generation. We also saw three children diagnosed with ichthyosis, one, a newborn sibling now diagnosed with the same disease as his two older siblings whom we saw last year. Michelle, our wound care specialist, was wonderful with the siblings. She was able to provide them with a large amount of donations and knowledge as to how

Tunisia Medical Aid

Simultaneously, IMR was delivering medication to refugee communities along the Tunisia-Libya border and assessing the living conditions with one of our partner organizations. The majority of these camps are merely transitional camps, and conditions are relatively stable. These valuable medical supplies were enough to treat a community of 50,000 people. The life saving medical aid was quickly put to work to help those patients in great need. “We saved lives. Without these necessary medicines, patients in these communities would have lost their lives” states Shauna King, Founder and President of International Medical Relief. “I want to provide hope to these

Ethiopia – Famine and Drought 2015

In 2015, Ethiopia experienced its worst drought in over 30 years. Households in regions hit particularly hard, including the eastern highlands and pastoralist areas, are expected to suffer especially severe crop and livestock losses. According to UN estimates, about 10.1 million people, approximately 10 percent of Ethiopia’s population, are in need of food assistance. From the mid-1990s through 2010, the Ethiopian government under the late President Meles Zenawi followed an Agricultural Development-Led Industrialization (ADLI) strategy, where the government invested heavily in agriculture production and rural infrastructure, such as roads. This focus on agriculture and rural investments quickly paid off. According

Baby Luke – Kenya

It was the end of a long, but rewarding day on our third day of clinic. The cold rain lashed down on the Kenyan landscape creating a gray veil that was hard to see through. As we were preparing to close clinic for the day, a young 15 year old mother appeared in the rain carrying a 5 week old newborn boy named, “Luke”. Her family and the baby’s father had abandoned them due to the sickness of the baby. She had been walking for hours in the drenching rain to get help and it was immediately apparent that the

International Medical Relief in Ethiopia by Dr. Matt Dunn

Looking out the airplane window, on about the twelfth hour of a fourteen hour flight to Ethiopia, the hazy streak of water I’d been watching suddenly divided in the Sahara dust. The map suggested we were flying over Khartoum, where the White Nile and the Blue Nile become simply the Nile, en route to Cairo. As the plane followed the White branch southeast towards Ethiopia, it began to sink in that our team of 20+ healthcare volunteers was getting pretty far from home. With two dentists, two plastic surgeons, one obstetrician and an assortment of nurses and students, the International

Although we are fortunate that no one was hurt, IMR lost all of our medications, community education materials, would care supplies, clinic equipment including a full dental surgical kit, dental supplies, laboratory and ER supplies, diagnostic equipment and surgical equipment. We have now estimated the damages to be in excess

Saving a Life in Senegal

On International Medical Relief’s most recent trip to a remote village in sub-Saharan Africa, a young boy between the ages of one and two, was brought in to our clinic by his mother on our first day in country. He sustained second degree burns on both of his legs and arms from scalding hot water earlier that morning. The boy was not crying, but was listless, and limp. After being rehydrated he became more alert. While tending to his wounds, the boy began to cry and move about, a sign we were so happy to see that we didn’t mind

IMR Announces Plan for 2010 to Help Eradicate Malaria

The World Health Organization estimates that each year 300-500 million cases of malaria occur and more than 1 million people die of malaria, especially in developing countries. The majority of these deaths occur with children. The high cost of medicines and loss of production that arise as a result of the epidemic take an incredible toll on the economies of countries that in many cases are already crippled. IMR’s approach is simple. Our basic premise focuses on educating the remote communities that we serve about malaria, the risks, and prevention techniques. These techniques can be as simple as covering skin
