Diversity Initiatives
The diversity initiatives for International Medical Relief (IMR) involve ensuring inclusivity, diverse representation, and cultural sensitivity on volunteer teams and within the communities we serve.
Initiatives tailored to IMR’s mission and operations include:
Diverse Volunteer Recruitment Strategy
- IMR actively recruits medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and dentists, from diverse backgrounds and underrepresented communities.
- IMR collaborates with medical schools, professional organizations, and minority health associations to reach a broader pool of volunteers. We welcome volunteers from diverse ethnic, religious, and economic backgrounds.
- IMR financially supports qualified volunteers from low-income backgrounds or marginalized communities to participate in IMR missions. We hire locally and empower local communities by bringing diverse logistical staff to walk alongside our volunteer teams.
Cultural Competency Training
- IMR provides comprehensive training to all volunteers on cultural sensitivity, respecting local customs, and understanding diverse healthcare beliefs and practices.
- IMR provides interpreters to bridge communication gaps between volunteers and patients.
- IMR organizes pre-departure and in-field orientation sessions to educate volunteers about the social, economic, and political context of the communities they will be serving.
Community Engagement Programs
- IMR establishes partnerships with local community leaders, grassroots organizations, refugee communities, and indigenous healthcare providers to ensure that our initiatives are culturally relevant and respectful.
- IMR serves at the invitation and request of the local communities. We only serve in communities of untouched people groups or where there is limited or no access to healthcare. Our planning and implementation of healthcare projects are designed to promote ownership and sustainability at the community level.
- IMR organizes health education workshops and outreach programs tailored to the specific needs and priorities of each community. Considering factors include literacy levels, cultural competencies, diversification of people in communities, religious beliefs, and socio-economic status.
Diversity in Leadership and Governance
IMR ensures diversity and representation in our leadership team, board of directors, and advisory committees.
IMR actively recruits individuals from diverse backgrounds to serve in leadership roles within the organization.
IMR implements policies to promote equity and inclusion in decision-making processes and resource allocation.
Long-Term Partnership Development
- IMR prioritizes building long-term relationships with in-country hosts and local healthcare providers who reflect the diversity of the communities served by IMR.
- IMR supports capacity-building initiatives that empower local healthcare professionals, including training programs, medical equipment donations, and infrastructure improvements.
- IMR regularly assesses the impact of our interventions on marginalized populations and adjusts strategies accordingly to address any disparities or inequities.
Through these diversity initiatives, IMR can ensure that our volunteer teams are inclusive and culturally competent, thereby maximizing the impact of our global health efforts and promoting health equity for underserved populations worldwide.
