Interpreters
Do you have strong language skills and always wanted to help in a medical and dental clinic? Have you wanted to use your language skills to volunteer in your home country or abroad? Are you a foreign language major with an interest in a future career in a health career in medicine, dentistry, or public health? Are you a pre-med, pre-dental, or pre-nursing/nursing major and also a native speaker in a second language? International Medical Relief can provide you – and perhaps your school club – with a unique opportunity!
Many individuals and groups with expert language skills find that by joining a medical/dental mission, you get to learn and understand medical and dental care and provide health education to small groups and one-to-one while working directly with doctors and dentists. This unique opportunity may help you to fulfill more than one life goal by combining your skills and interests in a way in which you will touch hundreds of people each day.
Volunteer interpreters are highly valued in IMR clinics. You will work side by side with doctors, dentists, public health professionals, and medical staff members as an IMR volunteer. You will also have the opportunity to listen to and learn from local interpreters, who themselves are often medical and dental professionals in their country. Over the last 20 years, IMR has proudly traveled with volunteers who are also native speakers from the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, and Africa on our teams. We are also proud of the many dual-language club/pre-health career students that have found their calling and their language to be a springboard to help patients around the world and at home.

My heart is truly so full and I am so thankful I was able to be a part of this team. The team was made up of 42 amazing people from all over the U.S. The people of Kenya were absolutely wonderful and so kind and gracious. We were able to help 1,377 patients on this mission!!
If anyone is considering a mission mission, I hope you will consider International Medical Relief. I definitely hope to do more missions for sure and I will never forget this mission of a lifetime.
Together we have triaged, diagnosed, prescribed for, and treated over 600 patients in just three days, and will continue for a few more days. We’ve seen everything from malaria, infectious wounds, amebiasis, tuberculosis… to appendicitis, sepsis, and splenomegaly.
All with the help of some skilled, hardworking translators.
It’s been exhausting but rewarding, and one of the few times in life I’m eager to wake up and start the day.
It never ceases to amaze me how great of an impact people can have when we come together for a unified mission. I mean, our team was just a bunch of strangers that all gathered in one place, with one goal: to serve and give to the people of Haiti.
