Overview

The Need

Over the past five years, Denver’s unhoused population has nearly doubled and has grown at a rate far outpacing the city’s overall population growth. As homelessness continues to rise, public resources, government support, and charitable services have struggled to keep pace with increasing demand. The result is a growing number of individuals and families facing serious barriers to consistent healthcare, preventative services, and ongoing support.
Many people experiencing homelessness suffer from medical recidivism not because they are unwilling to care for themselves, but because they often lack access to the education, stability, and resources needed to manage their health. Chronic conditions may go untreated, preventative care may be missed, and minor health concerns can escalate into urgent medical needs. Many individuals also face difficulty navigating when and where to seek care, how to manage nutrition and medications, or how to maintain their health in unstable living conditions.
The need is not only for treatment, but for compassionate guidance, education, advocacy, and continuity of care. Through this work, IMR seeks to help vulnerable neighbors move toward healthier lives by offering care in the moment, while also helping them better understand their options and pathways to improved health and wellbeing.

Our Work

International Medical Relief began providing life-saving care within the Colorado shelter system during the COVID-19 pandemic. For nearly two years, IMR delivered 24/7 healthcare coverage in congregate residential settings, serving vulnerable populations experiencing homelessness and making a meaningful impact during a critical time of need.
Today, IMR is building on that foundation by continuing to serve these communities with compassion, dignity, and purpose. Through the Global Citizens Academy and Colorado volunteer experiences, participants become part of this ongoing story of care. Volunteers help advocate for patients, support community outreach efforts, and contribute to the delivery of health education and essential services that can improve and save lives.
This work also extends beyond Colorado. Participants help bridge local service with IMR’s international mission by assisting with the preparation and packing of medical supplies and equipment used in global deployments. These materials support doctors, nurses, and local healthcare teams providing sustainable education, diagnosis, treatment, triage, laboratory services, pharmacy support, and specialty care in underserved communities around the world.
With diligent planning and strong local partnership, IMR ensures that each mission supports clear outcomes aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, especially SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals. IMR works shoulder-to-shoulder with local hosts and partners to strengthen care, expand access, and help develop a future generation of healthcare and public health leaders. Whether in Colorado or abroad, our mission remains the same: to provide compassionate care, elevate vulnerable populations, and create meaningful opportunities for service that lead to lasting impact.

This Mission

Global Citizens Academy is an immersive service-learning experience created by International Medical Relief to inspire and equip the next generation of compassionate leaders. In collaboration with IMR’s work Colorado, this program offers participants the opportunity to serve locally while gaining a broader understanding of global health, humanitarian care, and community partnership.
At IMR, we believe global citizenship begins with a heart for service, a commitment to dignity, and a willingness to respond to human need wherever it exists. Participants do not need to travel internationally to make meaningful impact. Through the Global Citizens Academy, volunteers can engage directly in service at IMR’s U.S. headquarters and within Colorado communities, while also contributing to the preparation and support of international medical missions around the world.
This experience is designed to foster leadership, compassion, and practical understanding of humanitarian work. Participants will gain exposure to the principles that guide IMR’s work globally, including sustainable service, health education, partnership with local communities, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
