Overview
The Need
Cambodia continues to experience gaps in access to basic health care, particularly in rural and underserved communities where shortages of trained providers, clinics, and essential medicines limit timely and affordable care. Preventable and treatable conditions—such as maternal and infant health concerns, untreated dental disease, malnutrition, anemia, and common infections—can escalate quickly when early care is unavailable. These challenges disproportionately affect children, women, migrant workers, and families living far from medical facilities. For many patients, a visiting medical mission team is their only opportunity all year to receive care from a trained provider. Through healthcare volunteering abroad in Cambodia, volunteers engaged in medical mission trips and global health volunteering help reduce preventable suffering, strengthen community health, and expand access to care where it is needed most.
Our Work

Since 2012, International Medical Relief has been serving the people of Cambodia, bringing hundreds of volunteer medical, surgical, dental, and public health professionals to treat thousands of patients across the provinces of Phnom Penh, Pursat, Siem Reap, Battambang, Sihanoukville, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Svay Rieng, and Kampong Cham. IMR’s teams provide direct clinical care, life-changing surgical services, preventive medicine, dental treatment, clean water and hygiene education, and hands-on collaboration with local providers—advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals: SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being) by expanding access to essential and surgical care, SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation) through community health and hygiene education, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by improving health outcomes that support school attendance and workforce participation, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strong, sustained partnerships that strengthen Cambodia’s local health systems.
This Mission

International Medical Relief is honored to partner with Cambodian leaders, health professionals, and communities in advancing access to health care and preventive health education, particularly in underserved and remote areas. While meaningful strides have been made, gaps in access to medical, surgical, dental, and public health services remain for vulnerable populations, including rural families, migrant workers, and unregistered communities. Through collaborative, community-based care and education, IMR works alongside local providers and government partners to support national health priorities, strengthen local capacity, and help build a healthier, more resilient future for Cambodia—one defined by opportunity, partnership, and hope.
Lodging/Transportation
The accommodations for the Signature trip are at a 4-star hotel with plenty of amenities to make your stay in Cambodia comfortable and enjoyable. During your stay in Siem Reap, you will love the bustle of the city and the wide variety of cuisine.
All transportation to and from the clinic has been arranged for you. Professional drivers, safe vehicles, and security are some of the many reasons to join IMR on a trip. Don’t nap – there’s a lot to see in the valleys and hills surrounding your home away from home this week!
Highlights

The heart of this journey is serving patients who, without you and your team, would have limited or no access to health care—making each clinic day deeply meaningful and impactful. Volunteers serve diverse communities throughout Phnom Penh, building trust, sharing knowledge, and delivering compassionate care during a season that holds deep cultural significance. Serving during Khmer New Year adds special meaning, as it is a time centered on renewal, family, gratitude, and blessing—values that closely align with the spirit of medical service.
As an extension of the mission, volunteers may also experience Khmer New Year (Chaul Chnam Thmey) celebrations throughout the city. Festivities often include visits to Wat Phnom, traditional ceremonies, offerings for good fortune, and joyful community gatherings. Around the Royal Palace and along the Mekong River, Phnom Penh comes alive with music, traditional games, water blessings, and shared meals that reflect Cambodia’s deep sense of connection and resilience.
Experiencing Phnom Penh during Khmer New Year offers a rare opportunity to witness Cambodia at its most vibrant—where service and celebration intersect. IMR goes beyond medical care to create space for cultural immersion, reflection, and connection, allowing volunteers to take part in a season of renewal while making a lasting impact on the lives of those they serve.
Extend Your Stay

Since you’re already traveling halfway around the world, consider extending your stay to experience the best of Cambodia beyond the clinic. IMR offers an optional, volunteer-only extension designed to deepen your cultural connection and allow time to explore Cambodia’s most iconic sights and experiences at a relaxed pace.
Extension highlights may include a sunrise or sunset visit to Angkor Wat, a guided excursion to the floating villages of Tonlé Sap Lake, and visits to vibrant local markets. Food lovers can enjoy a hands-on Khmer cooking class, learning traditional techniques and flavors, while evenings may feature an ancient dinner and Apsara dance performance or time to explore lively night markets filled with local crafts and street food.
An extension is the perfect way to reflect, recharge, and experience Cambodia more fully—blending history, culture, cuisine, and community to beautifully round out your mission and create lasting memories.

Extensions
Since you are already venturing across the globe, have you considered extending your stay by a few days to see Cambodia’s top tourist destinations? Did you know IMR offers an exclusive three-day extension to its volunteers? By continuing your trip and exploring off the beaten path, you will give yourself more time to visit Cambodia’s beaches, mountains, waterfalls, temples, and markets.
Of all the incredible little trips you can take, our top recommendation is a sunset visit to Angkor Wat. While you are out, be sure you venture over to a beach bar to appreciate local nightlife and the glow-in-the-dark plankton. Moreover, if you are an adventurer at heart, you can take a nighttime snorkeling trip along the shores.
If you are more of a foodie and less of a wanderer, Cambodia is home to many local chefs who offer cooking classes. Alternatively, you can order “a-ping,” which is a local favorite. Though undoubtedly unique, you can find these deep-fried tarantulas in sit-down restaurants or the marketplace.
