Overview
The Need

Uganda continues to face significant healthcare access challenges that make medical, dental, and community health outreach deeply needed. The country’s population surpassed 50 million in 2024, and Uganda remains one of the youngest nations in the world, with 44% of its population under age 14. This rapid growth places ongoing pressure on clinics, hospitals, and already-limited healthcare infrastructure. Physician availability also remains low, with the World Bank reporting about 0.2 physicians per 1,000 people. Maternal and child health needs remain substantial, and UNICEF reports that Uganda’s under-five mortality rate declined from 64 to 52 deaths per 1,000 live births between 2016 and 2022, showing progress, but also underscoring the continued need for accessible care.
Malnutrition, infectious disease, and barriers to preventive care also continue to affect vulnerable communities. UNICEF Uganda notes that malnutrition remains a major concern, with widespread anemia among young children and women of childbearing age. WHO data for Uganda also continue to highlight infectious disease burdens, including malaria, tuberculosis, and ongoing HIV-related health challenges. In many underserved communities, delayed treatment, long travel distances, and out-of-pocket costs can make otherwise treatable conditions far more serious. For all of these reasons, Uganda remains a place where IMR’s model of acute care, dental services, and health education can have meaningful impact.
Our Work

International Medical Relief began its partnership with Uganda in 2013 and remains committed to working alongside local officials and community partners to expand access to care, strengthen community health, and support sustainable impact.
Each mission is thoughtfully designed to advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 3, 6, 8, and 17.
Through UNSDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, IMR provides medical, dental, and public health services to vulnerable populations. Through UNSDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, we promote hygiene, sanitation, and prevention education. Through UNSDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, we help strengthen local workforce capacity and support the development of future health leaders. Through UNSDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, we work only by formal invitation and in close collaboration with local hosts and officials to ensure our efforts are respectful, sustainable, and responsive to community need.
This Mission

Uganda is a landlocked East African nation known for its remarkable natural beauty, biological diversity, and rich cultural heritage. From sweeping savannas and mountain ranges to lakes, forests, and protected wildlife areas, Uganda offers an extraordinary setting for service and discovery. The country is home to globally recognized natural treasures such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, famous for mountain gorilla conservation, and Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s oldest and largest conservation area.
Yet beyond its beautiful landscapes, many communities continue to face serious barriers to healthcare, nutrition, sanitation, and preventive services. Uganda is culturally vibrant, youthful, and deeply welcoming. Its communities reflect extraordinary resilience, warmth, and strong family traditions. In clinic, volunteers often care for large numbers of children, mothers, elders, and families who have had limited access to timely treatment and preventive care. The relationships built during this mission often become one of the most meaningful parts of the experience, inspiring volunteers to serve with compassion and often return again.
During clinic, your team may help treat malaria-related illness, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal disease, skin conditions, wounds, chronic untreated concerns, and other preventable or manageable illnesses commonly seen in underserved settings. Dental care is also a vital part of this mission, as many patients have gone long periods without access to oral health services. Health education, prevention, and encouragement are woven throughout the clinical experience.
Lodging/Transportation
Your team will fly into Kigali, Rwanda and then you will transfer via vehicle to the community in Uganda.
Your team will travel to Uganda using routes coordinated by IMR and our local partners. Participants are hosted in clean, comfortable, and modest accommodations arranged to support team safety, rest, and efficient daily travel to clinic sites. Ground transportation is organized in advance, and IMR works with experienced professional local drivers and trusted in-country partners to provide dependable transportation throughout the mission.
Final arrival instructions, and transportation details are provided in pre-departure materials so volunteers feel well prepared before travel.
Highlights

In clinic, you will see firsthand how your efforts can make a tangible difference as you care for patients facing infectious disease, untreated wounds, dental pain, malaria-related illness, and water- and mosquito-borne conditions. Depending on community needs and local coordination, teams may also have opportunities to extend care beyond the clinic setting through outreach that reaches especially vulnerable patients.
Beyond the clinic, this mission also offers the chance to experience the extraordinary beauty of Uganda. Volunteers may encounter some of Africa’s most iconic wildlife and landscapes, deepening their understanding of the country they have come to serve. The combination of meaningful service, warm community connection, and unforgettable natural beauty makes Uganda a profoundly impactful IMR experience.

Today is your first day of clinic! Wake to enjoy a hearty breakfast with your team. Clinics begin early in the morning and run into the evenings. Your days will be long and hard, but also incredibly rewarding. Your team will work at several clinic sites, local communities that do not have reliable access to health care.
You and your team will provide training for local healthcare providers to continue IMR’s long-term, sustainable education efforts. Each clinic includes basic health education according to the specialties and skills of the IMR volunteers, as well as the needs of the local people.
